52:9 | Motherhood is: taking time for yourself |
Last week, I had an appointment with my naturopath. Amid a string of questions, she asked,
“So, what do you do for yourself?”
I was momentarily stumped… I’d never really been asked that before!
Being a stay-at-home-mom is a time-consuming job. It’s literally 24/7, and revolves around one thing: your child. Hands down, it’s the best job I’ve ever had, but it really does take up a lot of your time!
When I was asked what I do for myself, what immediately came to mind was exercise, spending time with my family, and being outdoors. What my doctor pointed out though, is that all of those things are done with Sophie. Sure, they are benefiting me (and her too), but it still involves her, and therefore, is somewhat consumed with her.
OK, so those things aren’t strictly for me…So what is? Well, I do a once-a-week boot camp that is strictly me. Excellent. I have time after Sophie goes to bed that is strictly me…but that can be filled with chores, cleaning up, laundry, etc. I do get an evening here and there where I meet friends, which is most excellent.
So my homework this week is to figure out what I can do, for me. It appears that if I spend a teeny bit more time on myself, it will have huge rewards when it comes to my family. It’s amazing how you go from having your life revolve around yourself, to realizing you haven’t had a moment to yourself for as long as you remember! It is well worth the sacrifice, but it is awfully important to remember yourself too.
